Closing Development Centers
Next Step is partnering with other groups to close developmental centers (institutions) in New Jersey and throughout the country. We support everyone’s right to live in a place of their choice in the community.

Healthcare
Next Step partners with other organizations, such as USAction and Citizen Action, to address the issue of healthcare at local, state, and national levels.

Housing
Next Step works with a national consultant who assists its members in obtaining accessible, affordable housing. It also collaborates with state and national organizations in supporting legislation that increases the supply of accessible, affordable housing. In addition, its litigation team has failed suits to enforce accessible housing laws and regulation in New Jersey , which can be modeled in other jurisdictions.  

Litigation Shout-Out
Next Step will hold meetings in New Jersey so that people with disabilities can describe their experiences with discrimination. Our team of legal advisors will be on hand to advise them about legal recourse they may take.

Peace
Next Step plays prominent roles at peace rallies because poor people are often the most affected by the high cost of war. 

Railroad Station Clean-Up
Next Step is working with local officials to make sure that the elevators used by people with disabilities are not degraded by people who are homeless.  

Jerzy Doc Fund
Next Step has recently begun a new funding initiative which we are calling the “Jerzy Doc Fund.” This fund was introduced in response to the personal needs of one of our own members. Our group felt a collective responsibility to support her and immediately began the “Jerzy Doc Fund,” named in honor of its first recipient.   This fund has two purposes: first to support our membership in times of crisis and second to foster community amongst our members. An advisory board has already been established to manage distribution of the funds.
